Montblanc Customer’s Q&A
What are the features of Montblanc watches?
Montblanc is a German luxury goods brand known for its high-quality products. It started with a simple pen and eventually revolutionised the watchmaking industry. The watches from Montblanc are well-established and loved for their high quality, unparalleled craftsmanship, and great designs.
The brand's watches are often associated with bold, classic shapes and brilliant uses of color and texture. Some of the watches harbor in-house movements and complication modules. Particularly, the dressy models from Montblanc exude the finishing of a master artisan, in-house movements (mostly Selita-based), and a trademark Sfumato leather making.
Montblanc's investment appeal stems from its blend of Swiss watchmaking tradition, quality craftsmanship, and innovative design. Their premium models often feature complex complications and meticulous hand-finishing, making them desirable to collectors.
The cornerstone of Montblanc’s brand identity is the Meisterstück (German for “masterpiece”) pen. The Meisterstück propelled Montblanc into international stardom, with a model eventually making its way to the desk of one of Montblanc’s most famous customers decades later—United States President John F. Kennedy. Since 1929, the Meisterstück’s nib has been engraved with “4810,” a reference to the 4,810 meter height of the Mont Blanc mountain to which the brand also nods in its six-pointed snowcap logo. Naturally, references to the mountain figures into Montblanc branding in multiple ways.
Montblanc’s story is really a tale of two companies: the pen maker and the watchmaker Minerva. Another number you might find swirling through Montblanc’s catalog is 1858. This refers to the year a movement-making company founded by Charles Robert and brother Hyppolite, came to the Swiss town of Villeret. With its capacity to produce high-end, highly renowned movements (especially chronographs), the Fabrique d’Horlogerie Minerva SA (as it was later known) managed to actually survive the Quartz Crisis that killed off many watchmakers.
This is a brief overview of the features of Montblanc watches. They are truly a blend of tradition, craftsmanship, and innovation.

What is the history of Montblanc?
Montblanc is a German manufacturer and distributor of luxury goods, founded in Berlin in 1906, and currently based in Hamburg. The company is most known for its luxury pens and also designs and distributes bags, small leather goods, and watches. Since 1993, Montblanc has been part of the Swiss Richemont group. A Hamburg banker, Alfred Nehemias, and a Berlin engineer, August Eberstein, produced simple pens in 1906. After a short period of time Wilhelm Dziambor, Christian Lausen, and later Claus Johannes Voss took over the business. Their first model was the Rouge et Noir in 1909 followed in 1910 by the pen that was later to give the company its new name, Montblanc. The Meisterstück name was used for the first time in 1924. Today, the Montblanc brand is on other goods besides pens, including watches, jewellery, fragrances, leather goods, and eyewear. The company was founded in 1906 as Simplizissiumus-Füllhalter in Berlin, and in 1907, moved to Hamburg and changed its name to Simplo Filler Pen Co. GmbH; it was incorporated under that name in 1908. Its current name was adopted in 1934. Montblanc was acquired by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. in 1977, following which lower price pens were dropped, and the brand was used on a wide range of luxury goods other than pens. In 1993, Montblanc became part of the Swiss Richemont group. Its sister companies include luxury brands Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chloé, and Baume et Mercier. Montblanc is owned, through Richemont, by the South African Rupert family. Montblanc fountain pens are considered to be among the best in the world, and are collected for their smooth writing capabilities, as status symbols and artwork, and as investments. The most expensive regular production fountain pens are traditionally Montblancs, with some retail pens selling in excess of US $30,000.00, and some specialty and limited edition pens selling for substantially more. While not the most expensive pen in history, it is the most expensive overall brand.
